Test Tips – When Do You Consult with a Physician
If an answer choice includes consulting with a physician when there is a potential medical issue, choose that answer IF you have already ruled out a mental health issue for the presenting problem. Some physiological phenomena are actually psychological in nature and are, therefore, more appropriately addressed by the social worker. This may be the case with anxiety, for instance. Therefore, appropriate assessment is needed by the social worker, FIRST. In other words, before sending someone away from your office, make sure you do your due diligence prior to referring to a physician. You can always refer after you have done your job first. Of course, if there is an urgent or obvious medical issue seek medical support immediately. ©LEAP
